“Art” has a knack for drawing attention, whether you love or hate it – a bit like Marmite possibly. Everyone can remember something a bit shocking to do with art whether humans in formaldehyde, or toilets covered in gold, or self-shredding paintings, maybe…
Recently a group of artivists called Unbewitching Finance organised live performances of incantations and setting fire to wallets, exhibitions displaying magical artefacts that (may or may not) conjure up wealth, and more.
It enabled activists, artists and concerned citizens in Brussels to participate in an effort to draw attention to bizarre situation: our blind reliance on the financial system.
It certainly raises a good point : no-one understands how the financial world works – except financial experts – and yet we all interact with banks, money and payments daily.
The newest campaign wants to draw attention to the lack of funds for the healthcare sector, by planting ‘oseille’ (French for ‘sorel’ and slang for ‘money’) near hospitals and retirement homes around Brussels, from 7 to 15 July 2020.
